The UGC drafted new policy in February 2018 to be followed for minimum qualifications for appointment of teachers and other academics staff in universities and colleges. UGC also regulated the measures for maintenance of higher education standards 2018 according to which there are certain minimum qualifications for recruitment to the post of professors, principals, deputy librarians, assistant professors, assistant directors for of sports and physical education. UGC had asked for a feedback from the stakeholders on this new policy.
Candidates who have been accorded with a Ph.D degree in accordance with the UGC Regulations,2009 or 2016, and their succeeding qualifications from time to time, as the case may be, shall not be a subject to the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment for any positionin any of the college or university.
Under the eligibility criteria for assistant professor recruitment, a Ph.D degree from a university or institution that is a part of the top 500 colleges or university’s ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds, The Times Higher Education and Academic Ranking of World Universities of the Shangai Jiao Tong University shall also be eligible.
As for the graduation marks are considered they shall be taken into account for checking the eligibility for selection of assistant professors. Candidate with 80% and above in graduation will get a score of 15, for candidates scoring between 60-80% it will be 13, for 55-60% it will be 10 and for 45-55% it will be 5.
According to te new policy the teacing work load should not be less than 40 hours a week for 30 working weeks in an academic year. As for an assistant professor the workload ought to be 16 hours per week and that for associate professor it is confined to 14 hours per week.
